The Chargé d’affaires of Permanent Representation of Iraq to Geneva Holds a Meeting with Assistant Secretary-General of High-level Panel on Internal Displacement

The Chargé d’affaires and the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to Geneva, Dr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid held a virtual meeting with Mr. George Obbo, the Assistant Secretary General and Head of the General Secretariat of the High-level Panel on Internal Displacement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The two sides discussed the implications of the emerging Coronavirus on the team’s performance of its tasks, the agreement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to extend the work of the team, and the mandate granted to it.

The Chargé d’agaires talked about the importance of the Iraqi experience in dealing with the file of the displaced as one of the successful experiences that resulted in good practices that can be useful in dealing with international and societal situations similar to the Iraqi case, stressing Iraq’s interest in finding sustainable solutions to the file of the displaced, the role of governmental institutions, and Religious and local communities which made the Iraqi experience a success in dealing with the file of the displaced, and find appropriate solutions to return them to their areas of residence.

And they also discussed the negotiations that the team’s secretariat is conducting regarding the funding that the team needs for the extension period, the parties that indicated their willingness to provide financial support to enable the team to perform its tasks, in addition to the results of the meetings that it conducts to lay out the most effective ways in finding sustainable solutions, and the ongoing preparations for the team’s participation in the Union’s meetings of the European Union in Brussels, and the planned meeting with the African Union.
