Minister of Water Resources participates in a seminar organised by Stockholm International Water Institute

The Minister of Water Resources, Mr. Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, participated on 30/8/2022 in a seminar organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), titled “Water as a Driver for Peace and Cooperation”. The seminar focused on the significance of transboundary aquifers (TBAs) and how they can be catalysers for peace.
During his contribution, the Minister focused on challenges Iraq is facing due to the drought and water crises, stressing the need for international cooperation given the fact that Iraq has been designated by the UN specialized agencies as one of the top five most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, especially when it comes to water availability and quality.

The Minister also stressed the necessity for effective water international agreements. He also revealed Ministry’s plans to tackle the challenges through legislation and local regulations on water usage and through increasing awareness among the citizens and farmers. The Minister indicated that 80% of water in Iraq is used for agriculture.
