Visit to the city of Plovdiv – the oldest city in Europe
At the invitation of the Mayor of the Municipality of Plovdiv, Mr. Zdravko Dimitrov and Mrs. Nikolina Angelkova, former Minister of Tourism, H.E. the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq, Mrs. Lina Omar, visited the municipality of Plovdiv. with the heads of nine Arab diplomatic missions, including Iraq, among them (Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Algeria, Palestine and Qatar). During the visit, the Mayor of Plovdiv introduced their Excellencies to the rich cultural heritage of the region, as well as the opportunities for investment in the Plovdiv region, which has recently been developing at a high economic rate.
From her part, Mrs. Angelkova emphasized the possibility of strengthening cooperation and good communication with the countries, which aims to promote tourist exchange.
During the visit, Ambassador Lina Omar met with the two deputy mayors of Plovdiv, Mr. Stefan Stoyanov and Mr. Velichko Rodopski, and it was explained to her that the main indicators and trends in which the city strengthens its environment and its location, make it one of the most preferred trade destinations in South East Europe.
During the meeting, the Ambassador made proposals to strengthen the cooperation between Iraq and Bulgaria in all economic and educational aspects, and especially those with which the city of Plovdiv stands out.
The guests visited the Thrakia Economic Zone to get a real idea of the investment potential in the region and to see the cargo zones in the outscurts of the city and the industrial centers there related to the Green Deal, energy and the environment.
Together they also visited the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis.
An interesting fact is that the Plovdiv region is considered the oldest city in Europe, established around 6000 BC. The city is rich in archaeological monuments and ruins, proving that people settled in the region more than 8000 years ago years. It is also the second largest city in Bulgaria after the capital Sofia. It is also known for the cultivation of agricultural crops and fish farming.
