Meeting of the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq with Ambassador Maya Dobreva, Director General of the Directorate General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Ambassador Lina Omar met with Ambassador Maya Dobreva, Director General of the Directorate General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .                     During the meeting, Ambassador Lina Omar stressed the historically traditional relations between the two countries and mutual support between them at international forums, emphasizing Bulgaria’s role in efforts to support Iraq and its participation in international coalition forces, the latter of which was the supportive position of Bulgaria to remove the name of the Republic of Iraq from the list of high-risk countries in the field of money laundering and terrorist financing.

During the meeting H.E. Mrs. Lina Omar also expressed the desire of the Republic of Iraq to receive the support of the Republic of Bulgaria for the country’s candidacy for the post of Deputy Member of the Board of Directors of the International Labor Organization (ILO) for the period 2021-2024.

The possibilities for cooperation between the two countries were discussed. Hope was expressed for the restoration of the Bulgarian-Iraqi joint commitee for cooperation, which held its last meeting in 2013. in Sofia. Ambassador Lina Omar expressed hope for facilitating the issuance of entry visas for Iraqi investors wishing to invest in Bulgaria.

For her part, H.E.Mrs. Maya Dobreva thanked the Ambassador for this meeting, which contributes to the deepening of contacts between the two countries, which are facilitated by the bilateral meetings. Hopes have been expressed for support within the European Union and Iraq’s North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) so that the country can overcome the difficulties it faces. The effort to strengthen political, economic and cultural relations would also be discussed. At the end of the meeting, Ms. Dobreva expressed her pleasure to hold this meeting, which was an opportunity to exchange point of views.
