Iraq’s Statement at the meeting of the Committee of Special Political and Decolonization (Fourth Committee) of the 76th session of the General Assembly.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, Mr. Sarhad Sardar Fattah, delivered Iraq’s statement at the meeting of the Committee of Special Political and Decolonization (Fourth Committee) for the 76th session of the General Assembly. in which, He affirmed Iraq’s constant position in support of the Palestinian people in ending the occupation and restoring all the rights of the Palestinian people, as well as its unequivocal rejection of all violations committed by the occupying power of Islamic and Christian holy places. He praised UNRWA and the key role it has played in the lives of Palestinian refugees since 1949, in terms of education, health care, relief and social services, and its pivotal role until a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue is reached. He called on Member states to increase the support provided to UNRWA in order to be able to play its humanitarian role for the coming period.
He referred to the active role and efforts exerted by special political missions, specifically the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the country team representing a number of United Nations specialized organizations in basic humanitarian response issues, support for counter-terrorism efforts, as well as issues related to elections. He stressed the need for political missions to abide by the Charter of the United Nations, the purposes of international law and the specific mandate of their missions, and to be consistent with the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries operating in them.
He stressed Iraq’s commitment to the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines, and that it does not contribute to the production, use, illegal trade, or export of mines. This comes in line with Iraq’s desire and in cooperation with the international community to establish an environment free of mines and suitable for living in peace.
