Iraq’s Permanent Representative to UN Participates in Meeting on Iraqi Heritage

Iraq’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Mohammed Ali al-Hakim, participated on April 27, 2015 in the UN Security Council meeting on the fight against the smuggling, destruction and looting of cultural heritage in Iraq and Syria carried out by the terrorist organization Daash.

Ambassador al-Hakim met also the Executive Director of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova, and discussed ways to protect Iraqi antiquities from terrorist attacks and the necessary legal tools to prevent the smuggling of relics and bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice, in addition to coordinating with UNESCO for the success of Iraqi efforts in this area.

These activities are part of the preparations made by the Iraqi Mission to adopt a UN resolution to protect Iraq’s cultural heritage which was announced by Foreign Minister, Dr. Ibrahim al-Jaafari, during his visit to New York last week.
