Charge d’Affairs meets with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. António Guterres

Chargé d’Affairs of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kazem Obaid, met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres. At the beginning of the meeting, the Secretary-General expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude for the generous donation made by the Government of Iraq to UNRWA, describing it as an important step for humanitarian support. The Secretary-General directed his greetings to the Prime Minister and his Deputy, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Chargé d’Affaires indicated that the donation made by Iraq to UNRWA is a fulfillment of its obligations towards alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and the humanitarian disaster they are going through, and to enable UNRWA to continue implementing its mandate and facing the challenges of its financing in these circumstances. Developments related to the Palestinian issue were also discussed, and views were exchanged on the current situation the necessary efforts to achieve stability in the region and the importance of implementing relevant United Nations resolutions.

During the meeting, the existing relationship between Iraq and the United Nations and its specialized agencies operating in Iraq was reviewed, and the Chargé d’Affaires expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the United Nations and international agencies in providing assistance and technical support to Iraq during the past two decades. Also, the Chargé d’Affaires reviewed the developments and achievements achieved by the Iraqi government during these years in various fields.

The Secretary-General praised the roles played by Iraq and the obtained achievements, expressing his readiness to meet Iraq’s needs and continue to provide assistance.
