The Permanent Representative of Iraq delivers a national statement at the second session of the Conference on the Middle East
The Permanent Representative of Iraq, Ambassador Mohammad Bahr Al-Uloom, delivered Iraq’s statement at the opening session of the second session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, whose meetings are currently being held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, which witnessed the participation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
Iraq made it clear in its statement that holding the second session of this conference, in light of the current difficult security conditions, reflects the determination and political will of the participating countries in the region in order to achieve the goal of establishing a secure and stable Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, in a manner that contributes to strengthening regional and international peace and security. Stressing the importance of the success of holding this session and producing positive results by doubling the efforts made and showing more flexibility.
Iraq warned of the consequences of continuing not to implement the 1995 Middle East resolution, because this would undermine the disarmament and non-proliferation systems, negatively affect the credibility of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and add other complications to the problems associated with achieving its universality, stressing the need for concerted efforts and serious work for the success of this session.
Iraq stressed that taking any measures to establish this zone must be accompanied by the accession of the Israeli entity to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a non-nuclear party, the start of disarming its nuclear weapons, subjecting its nuclear facility to the comprehensive safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and its accession to all treaties related to nuclear non-proliferation and others and other weapons of mass destruction
