Iraq statement at the Thematic Debate – Disarmament and Regional Security
Continuing the participation of the delegation of Iraq in the meetings of the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, Counselor Hassanein Hadi delivered the statement of Iraq in the thematic discussion session devoted to the item entitled “Disarmament and regional security.”
He stressed Iraq’s position on the importance of nuclear-weapon-free zones as a cornerstone of regional confidence-building measures and could contribute to strengthening the disarmament and non-proliferation regimes. “The establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones is a step towards achieving the ultimate goal of creating a world free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, especially now that the world faces the enormous challenges of spreading the threat and accessibility of terrorist groups” he said.
He pointed out the important role played by the United Nations and the three depositary States of the NPT in the success of efforts to convene a conference on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East based on the 1995 Middle East resolution and the endorsement of the NPT Review Conferences in 2000 and 2010.
