Iraq Participates in Commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism

H.E. Ambassador Lukman Abdulraheem Al Faily, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, participated in the commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism, held virtually on 21 August 2026 under the theme “Healing through Memory,” serving as Moderator of the high-level segment of the event.
Ambassador Al Faily moderated the high-level segment, which featured remarks by the United Nations Secretary-General and the Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, as well as testimonies from victims and survivors of terrorism and a Global Minute of Silence in honour of victims of terrorism around the world. The Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain, in her capacity as Co-Chair of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism, also delivered a statement on behalf of the Group.
In his remarks, Ambassador Al Faily underscored the importance of ensuring that remembrance of victims of terrorism goes beyond commemoration to preserving their stories, upholding their dignity, and supporting healing and resilience. He also noted that Iraq is working closely with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and international partners in preparation for the Conference to Enhance International Support for Victims of Terrorism, to be convened in Baghdad during the final quarter of 2026.
