Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations Participates in the Informal meeting of the General Assembly to commemorate United Nations Charter Day

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, H.E. Ambassador Lukman Al Faily, participated, on 26 June 2026, in the Informal Commemorative Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly marking the 2026 United Nations Charter Day. In his statement, he reaffirmed Iraq’s steadfast commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, as well as its continued support for multilateralism, international law, and enhanced international cooperation. He underscored that the Charter remains the fundamental framework governing international relations and the primary guarantee for respect for the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of States. In addition to its role in promoting international peace and security, consolidating international cooperation, supports sustainable development, and protecting human rights and the rule of law.
Ambassador Al-Faily also expressed Iraq’s appreciation for the support provided by the United Nations and its specialised agencies over the past decades, particularly in the areas of peacebuilding, humanitarian assistance, reconstruction, development, and capacity-building. He further highlighted the programmes and projects that have contributed to supporting Iraq’s efforts in combating terrorism and strengthening security and stability, while reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to continuing its contribution to the United Nations’ efforts aimed at promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, cooperation among States, and a culture of peace and peaceful coexistence.
In this context, Ambassador Al-Faily stressed that addressing today’s global challenges requires a renewed commitment to multilateralism and international law as essential foundations for advancing peace, security, and sustainable development. He reaffirmed Iraq’s support for efforts to reform the United Nations and enhance the effectiveness and responsiveness of its principal organs in addressing current and emerging challenges, while preserving the Organisation’s central role as the foremost global forum for dialogue and cooperation among nations.
In concluding his statement, the Permanent Representative reaffirmed Iraq’s firm commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and its readiness to continue working with all Member States to address common challenges and strengthen international cooperation, with a view to building a more peaceful, secure, prosperous, just, and sustainable future for present and future generations.
