Permanent Representative Participates in a Dialogue on Strengthening the Impact of UN Development Coordination

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Lukman Al-Faily, participated as a co-convenor on 4 June 2026 in a dialogue entitled “Strengthening Coordination Impact: Perspectives from Resident Coordinators.” The event was hosted by the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations and jointly organized by the Permanent Missions of Iraq and Ireland, with the participation of the Assistant Secretary-General for Development Coordination, Resident Coordinators, and Permanent Representatives of Member States.

The dialogue was held on the margins of the ECOSOC Operational Activities for Development Segment and aimed to facilitate a direct exchange between Member States and Resident Coordinators on development coordination at the country level, lessons learned from the implementation of the UN development system reform, and ways to enhance the effectiveness and responsiveness of the United Nations in supporting national priorities.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Representative emphasized the importance of ensuring that the activities of the United Nations development system remain firmly anchored in the national priorities and needs of countries. He noted that the reforms launched by the General Assembly were intended to strengthen coordination and coherence across the system, thereby enabling more integrated and responsive support to developing countries.

The dialogue featured interactive discussions between Resident Coordinators and Member State representatives on a range of issues related to the future of the United Nations development system, including the role of Resident Coordinators, country-level coordination mechanisms, and ways to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of support provided to countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

In his concluding remarks, the Permanent Representative underscored the importance of drawing on the field-based experience of Resident Coordinators in the ongoing intergovernmental discussions on the future evolution of the United Nations development system. He stressed that the success of reform efforts should ultimately be measured by their ability to support countries in achieving their national development priorities and objectives.
