Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq Meets with the delegation of Japanese students participating in the “Oku-Inoue Commemorative Youth UN Visit Program

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, Ambassador Lukman Al-Faily, received a delegation of Japanese students participating in the “Oku-Inoue Commemorative Youth UN Visit Program” on 26 March 2026, at the premises of the Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations in New York. This meeting comes within the Mission’s ongoing efforts to support public diplomacy initiatives and promote cultural exchange, contributing to enhancing young people’s understanding of the United Nations and multilateral diplomacy.

During the meeting, the Permanent Representative delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting an overview of Iraq’s history, underscoring the rich civilizations of Mesopotamia and its contributions to human heritage. He also outlined the fundamental principles of Iraq’s foreign policy, which are based on respect for state sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and the promotion of international cooperation within the framework of the United Nations. He further addressed the nature of diplomatic work, emphasizing key skills and knowledge required, including negotiation, understanding international political contexts, and building consensus.

The presentation also covered the nature of diplomatic work in New York as a hub for multilateral diplomacy, including an overview of the United Nations’ working mechanisms and the role of permanent missions in following the work of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, and various committees, as well as coordination with regional and international groups. The meeting concluded with an interactive discussion, during which the Permanent Representative responded to students’ questions on diplomatic work and Iraq’s role in international fora. The students expressed their appreciation for the warm reception and the valuable insights shared.
