Iraq Elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the Term 2026–2028

The Republic of Iraq has been elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2026–2028, following the elections held on 14 October 2025 at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
This achievement represents the culmination of intensive diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, the Human Rights Department, and the Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations Office in Geneva. It also reflects the confidence of the international community in Iraq’s positive and balanced role in the promotion and protection of human rights.
This success comes within the framework of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ vision to strengthen Iraq’s active presence in international fora and to enhance its rightful standing within United Nations bodies and organizations. It also reflects Iraq’s renewed and constructive image on the international stage, while further consolidating its role among nations. Iraq’s election, with 175 votes out of 188 Member States present and voting, underscores the success of Iraqi diplomacy in international forums.
It is worth recalling that Iraq previously served as a member of the Human Rights Council for the term 2017–2019. Its re-election reaffirms the international community’s appreciation of Iraq’s notable progress in promoting the rule of law, institution-building, and the fulfillment of its international obligations in the field of human rights.
This membership constitutes an important opportunity for Iraq to play an active role in shaping and formulating global policies and decisions related to human rights, and to promote dialogue and understanding among Member States in a manner that upholds the values of justice, equality, and respect for human dignity.
