Iraq Delivers Statement on Behalf of the Group of 77 and China at the United Nations

The Delegation of the Republic of Iraq, led by Permanent Representative Lukman Al-Faily, delivered a statement on behalf of the Group of 77 and China during the first meeting of the Informal Ad Hoc Working Group on the Mandate Implementation Review, held under Workstream II of the UN80 Initiative at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In the statement, the Group reaffirmed that the UN80 Initiative is a valuable opportunity to strengthen the United Nations’ role in addressing today’s global challenges. It emphasized that any proposals emerging from this process must fully uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and preserve the intergovernmental nature of the Organization. The Group underlined that the UN80 process should reinforce, not weaken, multilateralism, and ensure that all Member States, especially developing countries, can participate equitably and meaningfully.
The Group also identified three guiding principles to steer its engagement: the spirit of consensus, Member-State-driven decision-making, and maintaining a balanced approach among the UN’s three pillars, with development at the forefront.
Concluding the statement, Ambassador Al-Faily reaffirmed the Group’s commitment to a process that is open, transparent, and inclusive, and that strengthens the United Nations’ ability to serve the collective interests of its Member States.
