Iraq’s Representative to UN Meets Under Secretary General For Counter-Terrorism

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, met with Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under Secretary General for Counter-Terrorism.

The meeting discussed the outcomes and results of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism Conference, which was recently held in the city of Vitoria, Spain, and co-chaired by Iraq and Spain, additionally, they touched on Iraq’s invitation to host the next conference in Baghdad in 2026, and the requirements necessary to begin preparations and joint working mechanisms for holding the conference.

The two sides also reviewed the issue of capacity building for specialists in national institutions, and joint cooperation through training programs and fellowships in counter-terrorism, preventing violent extremism, and cybersecurity in combating terrorism, in addition to benefiting from Iraqi experiences in these fields. On his part, the Under Secretary General commended the constructive collaboration between Iraq and its relevant national institutions, appreciating Iraq’s efforts in supporting the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and providing financial support, noting that this support confirms the policy of the Iraqi government, through its strategy and programs seeking to assist victims of terrorism, rehabilitate them and reintegrate them, and also emphasizes close cooperation to enhance joint efforts in combating terrorism.
