Iraq’s representative to the United Nations in New York delivers a statement at an emergency session of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East.
The Security Council held an emergency session on “the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question” on 31 July 2024, to discuss the latest developments in the region and the repercussions of the Israeli occupation and the violations committed.
The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered the statement of the Republic of Iraq, in which he expressed Iraq’s strong condemnation of the repeated attacks on the territories of the Lebanese Republic, the Syrian Arab Republic, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and his rejection of violations of the sovereignty of states and the sanctity of their territories.
He also condemned the criminal behavior of using assassination methods, calling on the Security Council and member states to assume their responsibilities and exercise their duties in maintaining international peace and security, stopping the war in the Gaza Strip, saving lives, opening border crossings, and delivering humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.
Dr. Obaid pointed out that Iraq had previously warned of the danger of escalation and expansion of war zones and their extensions and repercussions on regional and international peace and security, which increases the state of instability in the region and enhances the state of tension therein.
He also explained that despite many diplomatic paths, international initiatives, and Security Council and General Assembly resolutions calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and an end to its violations and arbitrary practices against the Palestinian people, the Israeli entity’s government continues to ignore all international legitimacy resolutions.
Dr. Obaid called on the Security Council to be more decisive in deterring Israeli aggressions and violations that undermine the stability of the region and the security of its people, and to reject the false claims made by the occupation government. He stressed Iraq’s firm and principled position in supporting the Palestinian people in determining their fate and achieving their aspirations to end the occupation and establish their independent state on the land of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital.
