Chargé d’Affaires delivers Iraq’s statement at the UNRWA Support Conference

A conference was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to provide financial pledges and support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), with the participation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the General Assembly, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, and member states of the United Nations.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered Iraq’s statement at the conference, which he expressed gratitude to Mr. Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, for his presence and briefing in which he conveyed the tragic picture, the extent of the suffering and the inhumane conditions in which the Palestinian people lives as a result of the crimes and war of extermination committed by the occupation forces, as well as he clarifies the financial crisis facing UNRWA.

Dr. Obaid stressed Iraq’s support for UNRWA and the importance of continuing its mandate and work for the humanitarian roles it has been carrying out in providing relief to millions of Palestinian people over the past 75 years and rejected the policy of restrictions practiced against the agency.

He expressed the gratitude for the efforts and sacrifices of its workers, noting that the Government of Iraq made a financial donation in the amount of $25 million to finance the Agency work and programmes, in addition to fuel, aid and direct humanitarian needs provided by the Iraqi Red Crescent to the Palestinian people, as well as its contribution to supplementing the agency’s efforts.

He renewed Iraq’s firm and principled position in support of the just and legitimate Palestinian right to achieve its aspirations, restore its rights, and establish its independent state.
