Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations meets with the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Legal Affairs

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, met with Mr. Stephen Matthews, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Legal Affairs, at the organization’s headquarters in New York on July 3, 2024.

During the meeting, Iraq’s relations with the United Nations, the legal measures followed, the contents of international resolutions, and mechanisms for implementing and following them were discussed.

The arrangements related to the UNITAD work team and the mechanism for implementing Security Council Resolution No. 2679 (2023) and its requirements regarding the implementation of the team’s mandate and the delivery of documents were also discussed, as well as the arrangements related to the completion of the stages and procedures for the liquidation and closure of the work of the team according to the timings set by the Security Council resolution.

The priorities and program of Mr. Matthews’s upcoming visit to Iraq were also discussed. The Chargé d’Affaires stressed that fighting terrorism and holding terrorists accountable requires concerted international efforts, expressing the readiness of Iraq and its relevant national institutions to cooperate with other countries in order to pursue terrorists and hold them accountable for their crimes.
