Chargé d’Affaires delivers Iraq’s statement in the committee concerned with the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

The Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples held its third meeting at United Nations Headquarters in New York, to review and assess the political and economic situation in the seventeen Non-Self-Governing Territories.

Charge d’Affairs of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid, delivered Iraq’s speech at the session. Where, he pointed out that the Declaration on Granting Independence to Colonial Peoples and Countries, No. 1514 of 1960, has become the basic foundation upon which peoples can gain independence and acquire full sovereignty over their lands and natural resources, as it is an integral part of their human dignity.

Dr. Obaid praised the committee’s decisions aiming to  re-send special visiting missions to collect information directly about the situation in those regions, and the necessity of focusing on the state of political, economic, social, and environmental development, and preserving the civilizational and cultural heritage of these regions.

He also stated the intention of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to develop a plan to provide free scholarships to students from non-self-governing regions who wish to complete undergraduate and graduate studies in Iraqi universities within the “Study in Iraq” program.

Dr. Obaid confirmed on Iraq’s firm and principled position towards the Palestinian issue, supporting what the Palestinian people decide, granting their legitimate, full and inalienable rights, establishing its independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions, ending the occupation, and granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations without restrictions Or a condition
