Iraq participates in the meetings of the Open-ended Working Group on Aging.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered a speech in which he referred to comprehensive national preventive and curative legislation, measures, policies and programs, implemented by the government institutions, dedicated to the care of the elderly, which reflects interest in the elderly segment for the purpose of enabling them to live a dignified and safe life. Pointing out the importance of health as a basic condition for achieving sustainable development goals in their three economic, social, and environmental dimensions, and for promoting global health. He called for the elimination of all forms of violence, abuse, and discrimination against the elderly, especially women. Emphasizing that the Iraqi government seeks to provide the right to a decent life and enjoy health and to perpetuate it as a guarantor right to build a societal foundation upon which efforts are based to implement the seventeen goals of sustainable development
