Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq delivers Iraq’s statement at a meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women
The Chargé d’Affairs at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered Iraq’s speech at the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which holds its meetings at the United Nations Headquarters during the period 11-22 March 2024.
The current session of the Commission on the Status of Women was characterized by a large, high-level presence of state delegations, as the number of participating female ministers reached 157 ministers, in addition to those with the rank of deputy minister and director general, which reflects the importance of the forum as an international platform for exchanging experiences and learning about the experiments of other countries and what they have achieved within the framework of the sustainable development goals and poverty eradication and its impact on achieving gender equality.
He referred to the national legislation and measures as well as the government program that guaranteed the principle of equal opportunities among all Iraqis, giving women the right to participate in political life, to elect and be nominated, to have equal opportunities in practical and professional life and to hold positions, all that guaranteed by the applicable laws and regulations.
Also, He expressed the solidarity of the government and people of Iraq with Palestinian women in their struggle to gain their freedom and the violations they are subjected to by the Israeli occupation forces, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian people. In his statement he called for urgent action at the Arab, Islamic and international levels to save civilians and stop the massacres and starvation policy.
Pointing out that Iraq provides support to the Palestine, and under the guidance of the Prime Minister, Iraq donated $25 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as well as launching an official popular campaign to send food aids in the holy month of Ramadan to the Palestinian people.
