Permanent Representative, Ambassador Mohamed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, delivers the country’s national statement at the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, on disarmament and international security

The statement stressed that strengthening the universality of disarmament conventions and treaties, especially those concerned with the disarmament of weapons of mass destruction, foremost of which are nuclear weapons, is the only guarantee after the use or threat of use of such weapons in order to avoid the catastrophic effects that could result from these deadly weapons, given their destructive nature on both humans and the environment,

Expressing Iraq’s disappointment with the failure of the 2015 and 2020 review conferences of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, respectively, while stressing the need to show the political will and flexibility necessary to overcome challenges and obstacles.

Warning of the consequences of continued procrastination in not implementing the 1995 Middle East resolution, which would undermine the disarmament and non-proliferation regimes, and negatively affect the credibility of the treaty and its universality.

Thanks to all countries and agencies that provided support and assistance in the field of disposal of mines and explosive remnants of war, which have caused the loss of thousands of lives or handicapped them, in addition to the social, economic and environmental impacts resulting from them.
