Iraq’s statement on the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency

Iraq presented its national statement before the United Nations General Assembly on the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency, where the statement affirmed Iraq’s strict adherence to the systems of non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, and its unwavering support for the full and effective implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as the cornerstone of the international non-proliferation system, as well as the continues support to IAEA and to the Director-General to support efforts to implement the safeguards system.

The statement commended the Agency’s pivotal role in supporting the needs of Member States to confront the COVID-19 crisis, noting that this global pandemic reaffirms the fundamental truth of solving global problems requires collective approaches that can only be achieved through multilateralism and international solidarity as well as international cooperation and partnership, Including combating the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing the crisis of climate change, and reducing the existential threat posed by the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The statement stressed that the national executive and supervisory authorities in Iraq are working with the International Atomic Energy Agency to develop an integrated work program to remove radioactive pollution in Iraq, and to develop national strategies to deal with radioactive waste, and work continues for the safe disposal of those radioactive waste resulting from various activities in medical centers and oil facilities.
