Iraq participated in the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime

Iraq as chair of APG for December, deliver the statement of the group in the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, were H.E. Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom the permanent representative of Iraq to the United Nations, explained in his speech that the year 2020 witnesses the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, which coincides with the 72th anniversary of the Genocide Convention, and from this platform we confirm that the best way can be honored Victims of genocide are preventing it from happening again.

The Group emphasize that the crime of genocide, as codified for the first time in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948, is an odious scourge that has inflicted great losses on humanity.

The Group remains concerned that the perpetrators of many of the violations of human rights and acts that may constitute the crime of genocide continue to elude justice

Combating impunity and achieving justice for the victims of genocide, through timely and proper investigation, and holding accountable perpetrators can send a message of reassurance to victims and their families.

Investing in new generations will strengthen societies’ resilience to atrocity crimes, as educating about the past is a key part of preventing their recurrence.

Ambassador Bahr Al-Uloom concluded the statement by saying, “We renew our commitment to collective efforts to build peaceful societies and to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.”
