Permanent Representative participated in the high-level meeting on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations
The Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, His Excellency Ambassador Mohammad Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, participated in the high-level meeting on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, which he delivered a speech saying : My country, Iraq, is one of the founding states of the United Nations, and a contributor to the drafting of the Charter, and therefore we find it important at this crucial stage for the United Nations members to speak in a collective and common voice about the crises facing the international community today, and to send our peoples a message of optimism and hope for the future.
Inspired by the slogan of our meeting for the 75th anniversary, which is “The future we want and the United Nations we need”, Iraq reaffirms its commitment to a multilateral international order based on the United Nations Charter and international law.
Iraq believes that the United Nations must remain the cornerstone of a multilateral international system, as the United Nations and its agencies need to work in partnership with all stakeholders to implement their mandates and decisions, as the Charter should be its main guide in this.
Despite our frustration to see that the COVID-19 pandemic has undermined many of our development gains over the past decades, we are optimistic about the continuation of the United Nations field work, as well as the support it provides to our response efforts to the epidemic and our efforts to follow up the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
It is appropriate to refer to the importance connection between sustainable development and peace, as one cannot be achieved in isolation from the other, and in this regard we find that it is important to highlight the negative role of terrorism as a threat that undermines the plans and policies of countries to achieve sustainable development, as we need to emphasize the importance of achieving development goals. The seventeen sustainable development in an integrated and comprehensive way.
It is also important to emphasize the critical importance of strengthening the role of the United Nations in conflict prevention, preventive diplomacy and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Iraq considers it necessary to consider the urgent need for the United Nations to respond to new and emerging issues in the future, by activating discussions on norms and standards related to trans-boundary water resources and cyber-security.
