Iraq Speech at Thematic Debate – Conventional Arms

On 23/10/2019و Third Secretary, Zeina Hadhal, delivered the speech of Iraq in the thematic discussion session devoted to conventional weapons within the work of the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security.

She pointed out that the phenomenon of illicit trafficking in conventional arms is a major factor in fueling armed conflicts and organized crime throughout the world, as well as being the main source of funding for terrorist groups.

Also, the proliferation of anti-personnel mines and explosive remnants of war, as well as cluster munitions, are important issues for their devastating effects on the environmental and economic realities.

Adding that Iraq tops the list of countries in the world that suffer from the problem of mines, pointing to the criminal practices adopted by the terrorist group of ISIS in the cultivation of mines and IEDs in large areas of Iraqi territory, which had a great impact in hindering the safe return of displaced people to their areas.
