Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Affairs
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Fuad Hussein met with US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Affairs, Mr. Jeffrey Bate, on the sidelines of the meetings of the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the Parties in the United Nations Framework Convention regarding the Climate Change (COP29) on Thursday, 11/14/2024, that conference was held in Baku, the Azerbaijani capital.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged their views regarding the efforts exerted by the Iraqi government to achieve its international obligations for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy production, and achieving self-sufficiency in electricity resources. The Minister reviewed the latest developments regarding the Iraqi government’s efforts to reduce the burning of gas associated with the extraction of crude oil, stressing that the concerned authorities in Iraq are proceeding with implementing a program to exploit associated gas in cooperation with major international companies, as well as, completing the network connection with several neighboring countries to provide electricity when it is needed. The minister also appreciated the support from friendly countries, especially the United States of America, which was provided through the Iraqi-American Joint Higher Coordination Committee (HCC).
For his side, Mr. Jeffrey Bate appreciated the active attendance of the Iraqi delegation at the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the Parties for the United Nations Framework Convention regarding Climate Change (COP29), expressing the US government’s willingness to continue the consultation and cooperation with Iraq within the Iraqi-US Joint High Coordination Committee.
