The Department of the League of Arab States is one of the Arab Department divisions in Ministry’s headquarters, the work of the division is summarized in coordinating, reporting and covering the activities and participations of the Ministry in meetings and conferences within the framework of the League of Arab States, the division also express statement regarding observations on the most important issues to Iraq in the framework of the League of Arab States, in addition to proposing draft resolutions and explanatory memos presented by Iraq in the ministerial meetings and the Arab Summits concerned with issues at the internal and Arab levels.
The tasks of Arab Department
1- Giving the Ministry’s Guidance and officials in the Iraqi government a clear vision regarding the political stances that the Iraqi government should take towards Arabic and regional issues, and convey that to the League of Arab States and including this in statements and documents of the League of Arab States.
2- Participating and attending political meetings convened by the League of Arab States, on the level of Arab Summits or the level of Foreign Ministers or High rank Arab officials.
3- Following up political, economic, social, health and environmental issues, concerning joint Arab action within the framework of the League of Arab States.
4- Coordinating and cooperating between various Iraqi ministries and the League of Arab States.
5- Facilitating the participation of ministerial and technical delegations in the meetings of the Arab League.
6- Deposing the agreements ratified by the Republic of Iraq within the framework of the League of Arab States.
7 – Following up the settlements of the contributions of the Republic of Iraq in the budget of the League of Arab States.

18- Activating the regional role of Iraq in its Arab surroundings through the active participation of former Foreign Minister H.E Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jaafari in the Ministerial retreat held in Abu Dhabi on 1st February, 2017.
19- Representing Iraq in the meetings of the League of Arab States on the Ministerial level held in Cairo, on 27 March, 2017.
20- The success of the diplomatic efforts in achieving an important and fruitful visit of Secretary General of the League of Arab States Dr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, to Baghdad, and discussing several issues of mutual concern in March 2017.
21- The participation of Iraq to the Arab summit held at Dead Sea, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on 29 March, 2017, headed by Prime Minister Dr. Haider Al-Abadi.
22- The participation of Iraq represented by the Head of Arab Department to the Arab-China Cooperation Forum, held in Beijing for the period 21-25 May, 2017.
23-The participation of Iraq in the Arab-Asian Forum, which was attended by Head of the Arab Department Ambassador Saad Mohammad Reza, on 24 October 2017, in Dushanbe the capital of Tajikistan.
24- Iraq’s participation in the Council of Construction and Housing of Arab Ministers, held in December 2017.
25- Participation of Deputy Head of the Arab Department in the Arab -European Forum, which was held in Brussels, on 27 November,2017.
26- Iraq’s participation in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States, at 149th regular session held in Cairo, under the chairmanship of former Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, in March 2018.
27- Participation in the Arab summit held in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in April 2018, the delegation of Iraq was headed by former President Dr. Fuad Masum and the membership of former Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jaafari.
28- Iraq’s participation in the Arab-Chinese Forum, held in China in July 2018
29- The participation of the former foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jaafari in the Ministerial Meeting of the Arab League Council at its 150 regular session, held at the headquarters of the League of Arab states in Cairo for the period 9-11 September, 2018.
30- Participating in the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit at its fourth session, which was held in Beirut for the period 14-20 January 2019, with a delegation headed by His Excellency foreign minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim.
31-the Participation in the joint Ministerial meeting of Foreign Ministers of the European Union and the Arab countries, which was held in Brussels on 4 February,2019.
32- Participating in the Arab-European Summit, which was held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt for the period 24-25 February, 2019, with a delegation headed by the President His Excellency Dr. Barham Saleh, and held several fruitful bilateral meetings with leaders and heads of Arab countries and the European Union.
33- Iraq’s participation in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States at its regular 151ST session, held in Cairo for the period from 4–6 March, 2019, under the chairmanship of Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim.
34- The participation of Iraq in the meetings of the Arab Summit, which was held in Tunis for the period 26-31 March, 2019, with a delegation headed by the president His Excellency Dr. Barham Salih and the membership of Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim.
35- The participation of Iraq in the Arab emergency summit meetings, held in Mecca on 30 May 2019, with a delegation headed by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Iraq Dr. Barham Saleh and the membership of Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim.
The Stance of the Republic of Iraq on crises in the region.
The Palestinian issue: Iraq considers the Palestinian issue a central issue and supports all resolutions issued by the Council of the League of Arab States, at the Ministerial level or the level of Arab summits in support of the Palestinian issue, Iraq has also taken measures regarding the Zionist entity violations and the decision of the United States of America to move its embassy to Al-Quds.
The Syrian crisis: Iraq calls to resolve the crisis through dialogue between all the Syrian parties, and exclude military action, supporting all international and regional efforts that support peaceful solution, Iraq has demanded in the meetings of the Arab summits and Ministerial meeting to the reinstatement of Syria’s membership return to the Arab League, Iraq has reserved the decision of the Council of the Arab League at its Extraordinary Session at the Ministerial level, regarding the suspension of Syria’s membership in the Arab League.
The Libyan crisis: Iraq called on Supporting the efforts of the Libyan government in combating terrorism and supporting the international efforts to establish stability in Libya based on resolution no. 8045 of the Ministerial Council of the League of Arab States, and enhancing stability throughout Libya, calling on to respect Libya’s sovereignty and non-interference in its internal affairs.
The Yemeni crisis: The position of Iraq was “to reject the military intervention in resolving the conflict in Yemen and call for the adoption of a dialogue leading to the formation of a national unity government, ending the fighting between the people and supporting all international and regional efforts”, but at the Arab summit in its 29th regular session in Dhahran, the remark was raised on the sidelines of the resolution.
Western Sahara:
“Iraq is working positively with all parties and affirms its neutral and consistent position, in support of the consensus at the UN meetings on the Western Sahara issue, and the issue is an internal matter for the Kingdom and the Republic of Iraq is with the territorial integrity of Morocco.”
