The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations Office at Geneva presents his credentials

The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ambassador Dr Hussain Mahmood Alkhateeb presented his credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Mr Michael Møller on 13th June 2019.

The Permanent Representative was received by the Chief of Protocol, Mr Sergei Shaposhnikov who accompanied His Excellency to the VIP main hall. H.E presented his credentials to Mr Muller and exchanged welcoming words and discussed a number of topics, notably:

– The Permanent Representative conveyed the greetings of His Excellency Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Mohamed Ali Alhakim to Mr Møller and the United Nations leadership in Geneva, and that Iraq attaches great importance to the work of the international organization in Iraq and the world. H.E highlighted the general foreign policy of the Iraqi government that is represented by moderation and non-alignment to any party in regional conflicts occurring in the Middle East, as well as Iraq’s position in taking an equal distance towards all parties, and its calls for resolving differences via dialogue and peaceful means that is underscored by all Iraqi policy in regional and international forums.

– H.E referred to the democratic transition in Iraq from 2003 until now and that the Iraqi government is democratically elected and expresses the will of the people, pointing out that this was not the case in the previous regime. H.E also spoke of the security challenges facing the country due to terrorism and that despite these challenges, Iraq applies the highest standards of human rights in dealing with terrorist groups.

– H.E emphasized Iraq’s interest in human rights and its hosting of several institutions, official bodies and civil society institutions dealing with this matter, and of Iraq’s keenness in implementing all international standards in this regard.

– H.E underscored Iraq’s need of United Nations support in light of the current situation and the challenges facing Iraq in the post-victory phase over terrorism.

On his part, Mr Møller welcomed the new Permanent Representative and promised to provide all possible assistance to Iraq and wished the Permanent Representative success in his new work and his readiness to meet with the Permanent Representative at any time.

At the end of the meeting, Mr Møller presented H.E with a set of books as a gift of acquaintance.

The Permanent Representative was accompanied by Deputy Permanent Representative and Minister Plenipotentiary Dr Abbas Kadhom Obaid, Minister Plenipotentiary Ms Mayada Abdul Hadi, Chief Protocol Officer at the United Nations Mr Sergei Shaposhnikov, Chief of Staff Mr. David Chikvaidze, Senior Advisor to the Director-General of the United Nations Mr. Felipe Oliakand Director of the United Nations Information Service Ms Alessandra Vellucci.
