The European Parliament Delegation for Relations With Iraq host the Ambassador of Iraq to EU
On 5/12/2019, the Delegation for Relations with Iraq in the European Parliament hosted Ambassador Sadiq Al-Rikabi, Ambassador of Iraq to the European Union, to discuss the latest developments in Iraq and the region.
During the meeting, several files were discussed, including the prospects of cooperation between the two sides within the partnership and cooperation agreement and the role of the Delegation of Iraq in promoting this cooperation
Regarding the issue of the demonstrations, which received the attention of the European deputies, Ambassador Al-Rikabi touched on the causes of the popular movement, stressing the legitimacy of the demands, and expressed regret for the victims in both demonstrators and security forces, and stressed that all those responsible for violence must be brought to justice, he pointed out that these demonstrations and the subsequent results confirm the validity of the democratic approach adopted by Iraq and despite all the circumstances surrounding Iraq, this system showed it is an effective system and the people through constitutional mechanisms can get their demands and reform the political process, the ambassador also pointed to the responsibilities of the government and the next parliament and clarified the expected role of EU in supporting Iraq in Political, economic and institutional areas.
This session witnessed the participation of several deputies from the delegations for relations with Iraq as well as the head of the section of Iraq and the Gulf in the European external action service (EEAS)
At the end of the meeting ,Chair of Iraq delegation (Sara Skyttedal), thanked the Ambassador for accepting the invitation and put forward balanced and frank exchange of views , which contributed to clarify many points for her and other members of the delegation.
