Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets President of UN General Assembly in New York

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with the President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly Mr. Philemon Yang, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The President of the General Assembly started the meeting by congratulating the Minister on Iraq assuming the presidency of the Group of 77 and China for 2025, commending Iraq’s potential role in enhancing cooperation among the countries of the group and defending their interests in international forums. In addition, Mr. Yang referred to Iraq’s historical and civilizational status and its distinguished role at the regional and international levels.

The meeting dealt with the latest developments in the Middle East, including the recent escalation in Gaza. The two sides stressed the importance of intensifying international efforts to achieving a ceasefire and ensure the protection of the Palestinian people. Additionally, Minister Fuad Hussein stressed Iraq’s stance that the international community should assume its responsibilities to stop the escalation, provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians, and ensure the fulfillment of their legitimate demands.

The two sides discussed ways of cooperation between Iraq, as President of the Group of 77 and China, and the United Nations General Assembly. Mr. Yang expressed his full support for Iraq’s efforts to advance the issues of developing countries and promote the sustainable development goals on the international arena.

At the end of the meeting, Minister Hussein expressed his appreciation for the role of the United Nations in supporting Iraq, and affirmed the Iraqi government’s commitment in close collaboration with the United Nations system, to enhance regional and international stability, achieve sustainable development, and confront climate challenges.
