Undersecretary for Political Planning Chairs a Panel Discussion on Iraq’s Options for Dealing with Transitional Situation in Syria

The Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Planning Ambassador Dr. Hisham Al-Alawi, chaired a panel discussion entitled “Iraq’s Options for Dealing with Transitional Scenarios in Syria”, with the participation of several experts from Iraqi ministries which are specialized in security, intelligence and military aspects, in addition to representatives of research centers, a number of university professors and academics, and the Ministry’s staff.

Undersecretary Al Alawi started the session with a detailed presentation about the developments in the situation in Syria since 2011, and the major and complex repercussions that followed the collapse of the Syrian regime on Iraq, across multiple scenarios. In his speech, the Undersecretary stressed the Iraqi government’s supportive stance for the Syrian people, emphasizing the importance of forming a comprehensive transitional government that represents all components of the Syrian people from different nationalities, religions and sects.

On their part, the experts in the security, military and intelligence fields outlined a number of visions and future scenes for the Syrian situation and its potential implications on Iraqi national security. As well the academics presented their analyses on how Iraq dealt with the Syrian crisis, highlighting its negative and positive results.
