Undersecretary for Political Planning Meets Senior Manager of Water for Peace Program at Geneva Water Hub

Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Planning Ambassador Dr. Hisham Al Alawi, held a virtual meeting with the Manger for Water for Peace Program at Geneva Water Hub Ms. Natasha Carmi. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Political Planning and Legal Departments. 

The two sides discussed the “Water for Peace and Development” initiative launched by the Foreign Ministry in cooperation with Geneva Water Hub.

Undersecretary Al Alawi, affirmed the importance of proceeding with an action plan to implement the initiative, commending Switzerland’s support for the initiative through the Swiss Federal Department for Foreign Affairs, the Geneva Water Hub and the Swiss Peace Foundation, as well he indicated that these agencies have extensive experience in the area of negotiations and water diplomacy, in addition to enhancing national capacity building, which contributes to supporting the initiative that is designed to using water as a platform for cooperation and dialogue between Iraq and its neighboring countries.

Additionally the Undersecretary added that the initiative includes the formation of a joint regional advisory council with Iraq as its center, which enhances regional stability, especially in light of the rapid political changes in the region, as well the Undersecretary stressed that the Iraqi government pays great attention to water diplomacy, given that Iraq is one of the countries in the region most affected by climate change.
