Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein: We Presented a Comprehensive Plan for Political Future of Syria

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein affirmed that the situation in Syria is of great importance to all Iraqis, indicating that security and political stability in Syria is an integral part of stability in Iraq.

The Minister added during a joint press conference held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, in the Jordanian city of Aqaba with the foreign ministers of Jordan, Turkey, and Egypt, at the end of the meeting of the “Arab Ministerial Contact Committee on Syria,” that the meeting included countries that are influential and affected by the Syrian situation, and stressed the importance of working to achieve stability in Syria.

Minister Hussein indicated that the conference highlighted a set of principles related to the political process in Syria, chief among them building a democratic process through dialogue, leading to a comprehensive political system that represents all Syrian components, and respecting human rights and women’s rights.

Additionally the Minister pointed out the need for a transitional phase led by the Syrians themselves with the help of regional and international players, to support the Syrian people in building a clear political process that guarantees the rights of citizens, and avoids any exclusionary policies towards national, sect or religious components.

The Minister affirmed the need to create a safe and stable environment that contributes to the return of Syrian refugees to their home, and enhancing the building of Syrian state institutions in a way that supports its political future.
