Foreign Ministry Statement on the Occasion of International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women

The Foreign Ministry affirms the Republic of Iraq’s stance against all forms of violence against women and its support for the efforts of Iraqi institutions implementing the (16-days Activism to End Violence Against Women).

On this occasion the Republic of Iraq renews its commitment to ending all forms of violence against women and girls, as this violence constitutes a blatant violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms, in addition to being an obstacle to social and economic development.

The international campaign represents an opportunity to emphasize Iraq’s firm commitment to confronting discrimination against women and rejecting all forms of violence against them. In this context, the Republic of Iraq joins international efforts aimed at eliminating violence against women as a humanitarian issue that affects the entire society.

The Republic of Iraq has made tangible progress in promoting and protecting women’s rights, and increasing their participation in political and public life. Women’s rights are constitutionally protected, guaranteed by national laws, and applied in government policies and strategies. 

Iraqi women also played a pivotal role in the plans and programs developed for rehabilitation and integration, and establishing security and stability after the victory over terrorism. Today, she represents a fundamental pillar in government plans and national legislation aimed at strengthening the economy and achieving comprehensive development, while preserving the values ​​and principles of society.

Within the framework of the campaign, the Republic of Iraq highlights the violations and violence directed at Palestinian women by the Israeli entity authorities. In this regard, Iraq renews its call to the international community to stand united in confronting the violence suffered by Palestinian women, and to condemn all forms of violations committed by the occupation authorities.
