Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets U.S. Envoy for Syria and Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq and Iran on Sidelines of Doha Forum

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met on 7 December 2024, with U.S. Envoy for Syria Natasha Franceschi, and the Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq and Iran Victoria Taylor, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum held in Qatar.

The meeting discussed the developments in the region especially the recent developments in Syria, as both sides stressed the seriousness of these developments and the importance of closely following the course of events. 

The Minister indicated that the Iraqi Government is keen to spare Iraq the repercussions of these events, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts to forge a path towards de-escalation and find comprehensive solutions to the situation in Syria. 

Additionally Minister Hussein pointed out that the situation in Syria could lead to an exacerbation of humanitarian crises and an increase in cases of internal displacement and asylum outside the borders, which could negatively affect regional stability.

The two sides agreed on the need to continue coordination to follow up on developments and prepare for any future developments.
