Foreign Ministry Organizes a Briefing Session for a Number of International Missions on Iraq’s Delegation Negotiating position for COP29

The Foreign Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, organized on 3 November, 2024, a briefing session on the position paper of the Iraqi negotiating delegation in the meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP29, scheduled to be held this November in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The briefing session was chaired by Ministry of Environment Undersecretary for Technical affairs Dr. Jassim Al Falahi, and the Head of the International Organizations and Conferences Department at the Foreign Ministry Dr. Fadhel Al Rahim, with the attendance of the Advisor to the Prime Minister for Climate Change Affairs, Dr. Ali Al Lami, and the Head of the Climate Change Department at the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Yousef Muayyad Yousef, in addition to the heads of international missions accredited to Iraq from : Switzerland, Brazil, Azerbaijan, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, France, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Finland, Turkey, the Arab Republic of Egypt, Australia, Germany, Italy, the European Union, in addition to the Deputy Special Representative of the UNAMI Mission, Dr. Ghulam Mohammad Isaczai.

During the session the representatives of the Ministry of Environment presented a brief presentation on the most important positions and negotiating visions of Iraq towards the negative repercussions of climate change on the world and the region, including its effects related to the decline of green spaces, the increase in dust and sand storms, water scarcity, and rising temperatures, as well as they reviewed the steps taken by Iraq to ensure effective participation in COP29, in line with its higher national interests and international commitments to the principles of the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the provisions of the Paris Climate Agreement. In addition, representatives of countries and organizations were informed of the side events that the Iraqi delegation intends to organize in its national pavilion during COP29.
