Iraq’s Representative to UN Delivers a Statement at an Emergency Session of Security Council on Situation in Middle East
The UN Security Council held an emergency session on 28 October 2024, to discuss the “situation in the Middle East”, at the request of Algeria, Russia and China, to discuss the attacks launched by the Israeli entity on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered Iraq’s statement during the session, in which he stressed that the occupation’s continued violations and attacks are the result of political coverage provided by some international parties, and the use of illegitimate justifications that contradict international law and the UN Charter, pointing out that the Security Council’s failure to take decisive steps to stop these attacks has encouraged the Israeli entity to persist in its crimes.
Mr. Obeid explained that the Israeli attacks began in the occupied Palestinian territories and extended to Lebanon and Syria, leading to the recent attack on Iran, which constitutes a blatant violation of Iran’s sovereignty and a dangerous escalation that threatens security and stability in the region, and increases the threat of expanding the scope of the conflict.
He stressed Iraq’s firm stance calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, and its support for regional stability through joint efforts at the regional and international levels. He also condemned the violations committed by Israeli aircraft in Iraqi airspace, considering them a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and the sanctity of its territory.
The Chargé d’Affaires stressed that Iraq will act within international and UN forums to confront these violations, adhering to its sovereignty and independence, and affirmed that Iraq will not allow its lands or airspace to be used to attack any country, especially neighboring countries with which it has relations of mutual respect and common interests.
The Chargé d’Affaires ended the statement by stressing the Iraqi government’s keenness to maintain regional stability and prevent the exploitation of Iraqi territory in regional conflicts.
