United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Affirms the Strength of British-Iraqi Relations and Calls for Avoiding War Expansion

United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Mr. David Lammy held a phone call with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, on October 7, 2024. 

During the call, the British Foreign Secretary affirmed the depth and strength of relations between Britain and Iraq, expressing his confidence that these relations will continue to develop and expand. The two Ministers discussed several issues, including economic aspects and the draft agreement of partnership between the two countries, in addition to addressing the issue of several Iraqis residing in Britain illegally.

In another context Foreign Secretary Lammy, touched on the situation in the Middle East, highlighting the British government’s great efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.

On his part, Minister Fuad Hussein underlined the importance of preventing the expansion of war in the region, noting that the continued escalation of war could lead to a social, economic and security catastrophe, which requires all influential countries to act to stop the conflict in Lebanon and Gaza.

The British Foreign Secretary affirmed that his government is striving to avoid the expansion of the scope of war, and protect Iraq from its repercussions, noting that he is in continuous contact with all parties to reduce tension. At the end of the call Minister Hussein extended an invitation to his British counterpart to visit Iraq.
