Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein Participates in Ministerial Meeting of Global Coalition to Defeat Da’esh
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein participated in the ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat Da’esh to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Coalition, which was held on Monday, September 30, 2024, in U.S., Washington.
In his speech, Minister Fuad Hussein stressed the pivotal role of this coalition in confronting Da’esh, who caused the displacement and killing of thousands and the destruction of human heritage. He also indicated the great successes which was achieved by joint efforts in weakening the terrorist organization, and the transition of efforts to a new phase in combating Da’esh.
The Minister indicated that the Iraqi security forces continue to carry out preemptive operations targeting the leaders and members of the organization, which contributed significantly to the reducing of its capabilities. Minister Hussein praised the strong partnership between Iraq and the Global Coalition, along with the NATO mission, which contributed in developing the capabilities of the Iraqi forces.
Despite the progress made, he stressed that Da’esh still poses a threat due to its ability to adapt and spread in different areas, which requires continuous updating of plans and tasks. He also mentioned the start of joint consultations between the Iraqi government and the Global Coalition to re-evaluate Operation Inherent Resolve and determine future needs.
Minister Hussein touched on the efforts of the Iraqi government to end the internal displacement issue, noting the return of thousands of displaced families in cooperation with the United Nations. He expressed Iraq’s concern regarding the continued situation in Al Hol and Roj camps in northeastern Syria, and called on hesitant countries to repatriate their nationals.
At the end of his speech the Minister stressed Iraq’s commitment to its membership in the Global Coalition to defeat Da’esh, and its readiness to transfer its rich experience in combating terrorism to other countries. During his intervention in the meeting, His Excellency referred to the joint statement between the American and Iraqi governments on the Timeline for the End of the military forces.
