Iraq Accomplishes a Significant Diplomatic Achievement by Officially Getting Elected to Chair G 77 which Enhances its Leading Role internationally
Iraq accomplished a significant diplomatic achievement by Officially being elected to chair the Group of 77 and China for 2025 during the 48th Annual Meeting held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on September 27, 2024.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr. António Guterres, and the President of the 79th Session of the General Assembly Philémon Yang. During the meeting the Minister delivered a speech in which he extended his thanks and appreciation for the trust that the member states have placed in Iraq, stressing that Iraq will assume this role with seriousness and commitment to enhance solidarity among developing countries and achieve the goals of sustainable development. Additionally Minister Hussein stressed Iraq’s readiness to cooperate closely with all delegations and partners to ensure the success of its mission next year. And to coordinate to achieve the interests of the member states and confront common challenges.
At the end of the speech the Minister expressed his aspiration to work with all parties to achieve the group’s visions and enhance the effective role of developing countries on the international arena, especially in light of the current global circumstances that require strengthening partnership and cooperation to achieve sustainable development and build a better future for all.
This election reflects the confidence that the international community has given to Iraq and enhances its leading role internationally. The Minister’s speech was widely welcomed by the member states, as many countries offered their congratulations to Iraq and expressed their full support for its leadership of the group. As well as the participants indicated the importance of enhancing cooperation.
