Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Discusses Regional Developments with his Iranian Counterpart and Calls to Unify Efforts to Achieve a Ceasefire in Lebanon

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on Thursday, September 26, 2024. 

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between Iraq and Iran and the importance of the recent visit of the Iranian President and his accompanying delegation to Baghdad, which represented an important station in strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The two Ministers also reviewed the latest developments in the region especially in Lebanon and the risks they may cause regionally and internationally. Additionally they stressed that the catastrophic humanitarian and economic consequences, in addition to the direct security implications, threatens international peace and security.

The two sides agreed on the need to unify efforts and stances, especially at the Islamic level in order to pressure for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

The two Ministers noted the failure and lack of adequate response by specialized international mechanisms, in dealing with armed conflicts and acts of aggression, stressing the importance of the UN Security Council carrying out its duties in this regard.

Additionally, Minister Fuad Hussein discussed Iraq’s proposal submitted to the Arab Group, which calls for holding an Arab and Islamic summit aimed at mobilizing international support for a ceasefire in Lebanon, Minister Hussein affirmed that Iraq will continue to follow up on this proposal in the coming days to achieve the convening of this summit.
