Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets with UN Special Representative on Sidelines of General Assembly in New York
The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with Ms. Pramila Patten UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
The meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the Iraqi government and the United Nations, especially with the Office of the Special Representative, within the periodic reports submitted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Security Council on cases of sexual violence around the world.
Special Representative Patten extended her thanks to the Minister for the continues cooperation with her office, praising the facilities provided by the Iraqi side, which contributed in achieving justice for victims of attacks committed by Da’esh terrorist organization.
The meeting also touched on ways to develop the legal and judicial structure in Iraq to address cases of sexual violence, in addition to strengthen the role of the competent authorities in rehabilitation and providing psychological support to victims, the conditions of the children of female victims were also discussed, and ways to address the legal gaps related to their legal status were explored.
At the end of the meeting the two sides agreed to continue cooperation between them and assess progress, with the necessity of highlighting the efforts of the Iraqi government in the areas of addressing and preventing these crimes.
