High Representative of European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell Affirms Stability of Iraq is Crucial and is of great importance for European Union policy
On Thursday, June 13, 2024, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, stressed in a telephone call with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, the importance of protecting the stability of Iraq, indicating that the European Union considers this as a part of its priorities in Foreign policy and regional security. Mr. Borrell called for the need to maintain strong relations between the United Nations and its Mission on one side and the Iraqi government on the other side.
During the phone call, the two sides touched on several issues related to European-Iraqi relations and the situation in the region.
With regard to bilateral relations, Minister Fuad Hussein expressed his happiness with the development of relations between the two parties, in addition to reaching understandings across various fields, as well as cooperation and mutual work based on the partnership agreement signed between the two sides more than a decade ago.
Both sides also discussed the serious tensions in the region, and expressed their support for the Security Council resolution on the ceasefire in Gaza, expressing at the same time their concern regarding the risk of expanding the scope of war and its spilling to southern Lebanon. They also touched on the outcomes of the Gaza aid conference held last Tuesday in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
At the end of the phone call, Minister Fuad Hussein called on Mr. Borrell to visit Iraq. On his part, Mr. Borrell expressed his happiness and agreed to fulfill the invitation, offering his thanks and gratitude to the Minister, and it was agreed to schedule the visit in the last quarter of this year.
