Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Receives Acting Head of UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh
On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, received the Acting Head of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh UNITAD, Ms. Ana Peyró Llopis, in his office at the Ministry’s headquarters. During the meeting they reviewed the procedures undertaken by the Investigative team to promote accountability for crimes committed by Da’esh, to end its mandate in Iraq in an orderly manner by the seventeenth of next September, in conformity with Security Council Resolution No. 2697 (2023).
Additionally, Minister Fuad Hussein, stated that the competent judicial and governmental authorities in Iraq are looking forward to receiving all the evidence, materials and analyzes collected by UNITAD, during Da’esh occupation for parts of Iraq in 2014.
On her part, Ms. Llopis, delivered a briefing in which she indicated that the team’s main actions at this stage focus on completing the archiving and documentation of the evidence, materials and analyzes, in the team’s possession for the purpose of handing them over to the competent Iraqi authorities, in conformity with Security Council Resolutions 2379 (2017) and 2697 (2023), and the United Nations methods of work in this field, noting that UNITAD, over the past few months, has returned much of the documents and evidence it obtained, to the competent Iraqi authorities.
