Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets United Nations Secretary General in Manama
On Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, met with Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. António Guterres, on the sidelines of the foreign ministers’ preparatory meeting for the Council of the Arab League at the 33rd Arab Summit in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
During the meeting, they discussed the most important issues related to the work of the United Nations Mission in Iraq UNAMI, and the current crises and international developments facing the region.
His Excellency Minister Fuad Hussein, praised the efforts exerted by UNAMI, emphasizing the continued communication with the international organization, especially since Iraq is keen to maintain good relations with the United Nations and its various specialized agencies.
On his part, the Secretary-General referred to the Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, message regarding ending the mandate of UNAMI, stressing his keenness to continuously communicate with the Iraqi government in order to maintain the distinguished relations between Iraq and the organization.
The Minister extended his thanks to Secretary General Guterres for his direct and clear opinion, stressing that his opinion will be conveyed to the Iraqi government.
In another context, the two sides touched on the situation in the Middle East, the war on Gaza and the situation in Syria, Sudan and Libya, especially since the crises facing the region require intensive work to achieve peace and stability.
At the end of the meeting, the Secretary-General extended his thanks to the Iraqi government for the financial support provided to UNRWA, describing it as important and timely to conduct the agency’s work.
