Undersecretary for Multilateral and Legal Affairs delivers Iraq’s Speech at High-level Segment of 55th Session of Human Rights Council
Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Multilateral and Legal Affairs Mr. Omer Al Berzinji, delivered Iraq’s speech the high-level segment of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, at the Palace of Nations in Geneva on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, in the presence of the Head of the Human Rights Department, Ambassador Abdul Kareem Toma Kaab.
Undersecretary Al Berzinji, condemned the continued aggression of the occupying entity, against the Gaza Strip and the continued targeting of innocent civilians, which led to the death of more than 30,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in blatant challenge of international human rights law, expressing deep concern about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, and reiterated the importance of preserving Collective support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
In his speech, Undersecretary Al Berzinji recalled the tenth anniversary of the genocide committed by the Daesh against the Iraqi people, stressing that Iraq has achieved important legislative progress in the field of achieving justice and reparation, through the legislation of the Yazidi Female Survivors Law, and the government started to build a database on women and girls who are covered by the law. In conclusion, Undersecretary Al Berzinji affirmed that Iraq submitted its candidature for membership of the Human Rights Council for the period (2026-2028), indicating that he hopes countries will provide support for this important nomination, especially since Iraq is following quiet diplomacy that bridge different visions.
