Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Meets Syrian Assistant Foreign Minister 

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Ambassador Muhammad Hussein Muhammad Bahr Al-Ulum, received the Syrian Assistant Foreign Minister Mr. Habib Ali Abbas, at the Ministry’s headquarters, Mr. Bahr Al-Ulum, stressed the necessity of these meetings, as they reflect the commitment of the two countries to strengthening the strategic partnership and achieving common progress and prosperity in the region.

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to promote them, emphasizing the importance of enhancing cooperation and coordination in various economic and political fields to achieve common interests.

In the context of the latest regional and international situation, both sides discussed the political and security challenges and developments in the region, highlighting the importance of continued cooperation and consultation between Iraq and Syria to address these challenges with the aim of stabilizing the region, they also underlined developments in the water issue, and the importance of regulating water releases into the Euphrates River in a way that does not affect Iraq’s water share, in this regard, they agreed for arranging to hold a joint meeting between the Ministers of water resources of the two countries.

In addition to, they touched on the outcomes of the contact group that recently brought together the interior Ministers of Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon regarding drug control and cordoning off its trade and passage in the region, the meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to Iraq.
