Press Statement: His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, participates in the Munich Security Conference

His Excellency the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, participated in the 60th Munich Security Conference 2024, which was held in Munich, Germany from February 16 to 18, 2024, within a high-level Iraqi delegation, headed by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the Minister attended the opening session of the Munich Security Conference, with the participation of a large number of political and security leaders, media groups and researchers.

On the sidelines of the conference, Minister Hussein participated in the Prime Minister meetings with a number of head of states and officials, including His Majesty king Abdullah II the king of Hashemite kingdom of Jordan, the US Vice President Kamala Harris, the German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas, the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, the British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Cameron, and several members of the US Congress.

His Excellency, also held many important bilateral meetings with several foreign ministers and officials, amounting to more than 12 meeting, including the German Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, the Foreign Minister of the State of Kuwait Mr. Abdullah Alyahya, and the Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, the Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman, the Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib, the French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné, in addition to, the Assistant Secretary General of NATO Ambassador Boris Ruge, the US Assistant Secretary of Defense Ms. Celeste Wallander, and the US Department of the Treasury’s Under Secretary Brian Nelson, the German Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Mr. Niels Annen, and European Union Commissioner for Home Affairs Ms. Ylva Johansson.

His Excellency, gave several interviews to the media that covered the conference, the participation was of a significant importance because it came in exceptional circumstances, the meetings reflected the desire of international parties to strengthen their relations with Iraq, and were an expression of Iraq’s regional and international importance, and the willingness of those parties to participate in the process of stability and development in Iraq.

Minister Hussein, discussed in his meetings, several bilateral, international and regional issues, especially the war on Gaza and its humanitarian and security repercussions, stressing and reiterating the firm stance of the Republic of Iraq, calling for an immediate ceasefire, the delivering of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, condemning any attempt to displace them from the Gaza Strip, and the necessity of stabilizing regional security.

His Excellency, also indicated during his meetings the need for regional and international parties to respect Iraqi sovereignty, and the refusal of Iraq being a place for score settling, emphasizing that Iraq looks forward to the comprehensive development process, whether at the internal or regional level, stressing the importance of security and stability in the region for the purpose of achieving that development.
